Nine hand-colored engravings, with etching and aquatint, 1827-33, by R. Havell, on wove paper, Cardinal Grosbeak with the J. Whatman 1833 watermark, Blue-bird and Cat Bird dated 1831, all partially trimmed, each framed (9 prints)
Condition
Blue Winged Yellow Warbler - With margins, the sheet trimmed and laid down (the watermark is not visible). The sheet is toned overall and the colors slightly attenuated. The yellow possibly re-colored.
Painted Bunting - With margins, the sheet trimmed and laid down (the watermark is not visible). The sheet edges discolored with adhesive stain, pale mat stain showing through recto from the verso. The subject re-colored.
Rice Bunting - The print is generally in good condition, with margins, the watermark trimmed away. There are inconspicuous tiny fox marks throughout, and discoloration at the extreme sheet edges. The verso with extremely pale mat stain.
Henslow's Bunting - With margins, the sheet trimmed and laid down (the watermark is not visible). The sheet is unevenly toned overall and the colors attenuated.
Indigo-bird - With margins, the sheet trimmed and laid down (the watermark is not visible). The sheet is toned overall and the colors slightly attenuated. The blue most likely re-colored.
Blue-bird - The print is generally in good condition, with wide margins, trimmed through the watermark. The colors slightly attenuated and the blue wings re-colored. Discoloration in the sheet is comprised of an infrequent pale fox mark, mat and light-stain, with scattered surface soiling on the verso.
Cat Bird - With margins, the sheet trimmed through the watermark. Generally in good condition, except the sheet brittle and rippled, a double-line of intermittent spotted discoloration (measuring 1 3/4 in.) below the plate number, additional infrequent tiny foxing in the margins, a line of pale curved discoloration at the lower left corner and discoloration at the extreme sheet edges. The verso with uneven mat stain and further scattered foxing.
Cardinal Grosbeak - The print is generally in good condition, trimmed, with margins. The red has been re-colored. The sheet with a few tiny fox marks, occasional soft handling creases, and discoloration at the extreme sheet edges. The verso with uneven mat stain, showing through slightly to the recto.
Wood Wren - The sheet is trimmed, with margins, and laid down (the watermark is not visible), the colors attenuated. A few pale fox marks, and discoloration at the sheet edges.
