Condition

The Orchard Oriole (Plate 42) sheet is in good condition, the colors strong, with wide margins and sheet edges trimmed slightly unevenly resulting in a 1 1/2 in. cut at bottom sheet edge. Minor surface soiling and scattered fox marks in the unprinted areas of the sheet, some through to the verso, located mainly in the margins. Pale mat stain at sheet edges and soft handling creases in right and left margins. Verso with minor surface soiling and few, very faint fox marks throughout. The Night Hawk (Plate CXLVII) sheet is in good condition, with wide margins, the greens are very slightly attenuated, but otherwise, the colors are strong. Minor surface soiling in unprinted areas of sheet with minor mat stain at extreme edges, a small nick on the top sheet edge, two small accretions at the extreme left margin, and tiny, pale, scattered fox marks in the margins. Scattered, soft handling creases in right and left margins, and a slight, inherent, textural variation in the paper from the top edge into the plate, and visible only upon close inspection with raking light. Verso with uneven tone and scattered, pale fox marks, a few through to the recto.
