Condition
The following condition report has been prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation: This painting is unlined. The tacking edges have received some slight reinforcement, but the reverse with its clearly visible inscription is untouched. The paint layer has developed some raised cracking in the sky which could be reduced without lining the canvas and completely eliminated if the painting were lined. To have a picture from this period and scale in an unlined condition is unusual and efforts should be made to retain this unsupported canvas. The paint layer is very fresh and well-textured. The only retouching appears to be a small spot in the rocks beyond the stream in the lower left. The condition overall is excellent.

Catalogue Note
Sotheby’s is privileged to offer Morning in the Alleghenies by William Louis Sonntag from the Collection of Twin Towers in Cincinnati, Ohio. Obed J. Wilson (1836-1914) led a fascinating life as a noted philanthropist and collector of important 19th century European and American paintings. Wilson was instilled with a love for art, travel, and intellectual pursuits from an early age. A shrewd businessman, he ultimately became the Editor-in-Chief of Wilson, Hinkle & Company, the largest publisher of schoolbooks in America. In 1853, Wilson married Amanda Landrum, who shared her husband’s love of art and travel. Together they amassed a collection of iconic pictures that reveal their discerning taste and eye for quality. Known for their great generosity, the Wilsons were particularly devoted to educational causes throughout their lives. They also gave substantially to the 25 acre site for the Methodist Home for the Aged on College Hill, now known as Twin Towers. After the building was completed circa 1908, the Wilsons donated their entire collection to Twin Towers, where it could be enjoyed by the residents and available for public view.
