The following condition report has been prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation: This painting on linen has been lined using wax as an adhesive. As wax is acidic, and this is an important painting, the lining should be reversed. The paint layer is probably slightly dirty. Under ultraviolet light, although the original paint fluoresces very dramatically in numerous areas, the only retouches seem to be in the center of the left half of the sky, where two or three small retouches are visible. There are also a few spots of retouching in the hillside on the right. The remainder of the broad and brushy areas of fluorescent paint is all original. The work is in beautiful condition. The slight thinness that one sees in the right side of the mountain appears to be original. The milkiness to some of the varnish, such as in the upper right edge, can be removed without retouching.
