Catalogue Note
As a designer, Ruhlmann sought to provide clients with comprehensive visions for their interiors, which included luxurious carpets. Ruhlmann's carpets are a broader interpretation of the same distinctive vision that he employed in his furniture designs. The present lot was designed by Henri Stephany who was employed for his expertise in flat carpet patterning. “Cercles et Ondes” was selected by Ruhlmann for inclusion in the 1928 Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris. The elegant abstract pattern of the carpet enhanced the decadent and romantic atmosphere of the room, and yet with a subtle stylistic reference also supported his grand showpiece, a burled walnut and satin bed.
