Condition
Overall in good condition. The limed oak is in very good condition, with surface scratches and the legs with scattered shallow losses throughout. As seen in the catalogue illustration the original leather upholstery shows significant signs of age and wear including crazing with associated losses (which expose the raw leather and thus appear as the areas of lighter coloration in the catalogue). Each of the chairs show minor evidence of prior restoration, stabilization and overpainting to the leather seats. The areas of overpainting appear slightly duller in tone, but were executed in a sensitive manner. One seat shows two Y-shaped tears with later restoration. The chair backrests show far less crazing, but do present with some discoloration and rubbing consistent with age and use. The reverse of backrests also upholstered in leather with tacks showing through in places. Overall the chair's leather upholstery would benefit from additional stabilization. Please contact the department for additional photos of any of the condition issues discussed in this report.
