Catalogue Note
"Chuang Che's paintings enrich an ongoing process by the artist of combining basic principles of Chinese art with the freedoms of international modernism, an impressive effort that now extends for over five decades of a distinguished career. As ever, the artist maintains as a touchstone in his art that central source of Eastern artistic expression, nature. Within his roiling, insistently worked surfaces, always ultimately constrained within a carefully developed composition, there comes a counterpoise of action and calm - an equilibrium which speaks of the opposing aspects of nature: sometimes tumultuous, sometimes peaceful. A balance is also found in his transfer of the manual and visual traditions of Chinese calligraphy."
