Catalogue Note
The Chinese title of L'ineffable No.2 is originated from Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching, Chapter 14:
From above it is not bright;
From below it is not dark:
An unbroken thread beyond description.
It returns to nothingness.
The form of the formless,
The image of the imageless,
It is called indefinable and beyond imagination.
In this work that reflects the Taoist philosophy of being in harmony with the universe, aside from emphasizing the rendering of light, Chu Teh-Chun applies rich blackish green to endow the canvas with boundless vitality. The colourful and precious gemstones on the canvas glow through the darkness with countless beams of light, attesting to Chu's high level of artistry as well as his exuberant and unstrained state of mind in the 1990s.
