Catalogue Note
Seated Nude is a unique portrait by David Wu. Neither adopting realism nor impressionism, Wu simply outlines the contours and features of the nude, and applies colour. This is further evident in the simple background, which the artist has applied in large bold strokes. The model, typically Chinese in appearance, permeates a sense of tenderness, enhanced by the smooth texture of her skin, which has been highlighted by the reflection of light. Her harshly emphasized eyebrows and lashes are depicted with a certain regularity that seems to intensify her dominating oriental spirit.
The portrait seems to recall the nude portraits by Pan Yuliang. In comparison, Pan focuses on the detailed outlines in the curves of the figure, rather than the balance of strength and power in the sketching, which Wu exemplifies in his work.
