Catalogue Note

"When painting a portrait the first thing I do is to study the person who is to be painted. I want to find out what his social position is and his character. If I do a society woman who is maybe rather homely looking, I stress the dignity and elegance, in this way the not so good features are minimized. To me, painting a portrait means getting the personality behind the surface in addition to a likeness; a photographic likeness alone will not look right, something will be lacking to make it that particular person."
