Catalogue Note
Sarah Faunce believes the present work to be by Courbet, begun in his youth prior to 1839 and re-worked by him later, possibly in the mid to late 1840s. While Jean-Jacques Fernier believes the painting to have been completed and signed by Courbet in Saintonge in 1862-3, he presumes the hand of Courbet's pupil Hippolyte Pradelles to be at large in its execution.
