Catalogue Note
In Greek mythology Pandora, the "all-gifted" or "all-giver" was the first woman fashioned from clay by Vulcan. Counted by the oral poet Hesiod, each god helped create her by giving her unique gifts. Here, Pandore is modelled holding a Phitos (large urn) containing all the evils that have since plagued mankind. Grégoire studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited at the Salon from 1867 to 1889. He specialized in portrait sculpture and allegorical subjects as well as more decorative pieces.
