Catalogue Note

Personally, one of the most rewarding and long-lasting relationships I have enjoyed is with the Estate of Art Smith. With the extraordinary pieces from Art's own collection, I was able to mount at Gansevoort Gallery in 1997 my favorite exhibition, "Intimate Sculpture: Art Smith and His Contemporaries 1940-1965." Recently, I helped negotiate a huge gift of 25 examples of Art's best work from the Estate to the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The exhibition, "Art Smith, From the Village to Vogue", conceived by Barry Harwood, helped spread the word about Art's unparalleled talent, using the jewelry and ephemera to beautifully illustrate a rich 40 year career.  -MM
