Condition

STURCTURE The watercolour is painted on an artist's watercolour board which is sound and has prevented the drawing from cockling or bowing. There is a spot of staining above one of the central gondolas. The sheet is very slightly discoloured, which is visible in the sky and along the lower edge. There are a few extremely minor surface abrasions to the sky upper right, which are only visible upon close inspection. Otherwise, the surface is in generally good overall condition. Catalogue Note

Poynter painted an earlier view of the Grand Canal and the church of Santa Maria della Salute in 1863 (Victoria and Albert Museum). The present picture was owned by Charles Alfred Temple, a noted connoisseur and expert on the works of Turner, who also owned Rossetti's The Loving Cup, Millais' The White Cockade and The Temptation of Eve by Stanhope.
