Oblong 4to (225 x 280mm.), engraved title, general map and 56 engraved county maps, some 2 to a page, 9 folding, [Chubb CCXXXV; Hodson III, 258], contemporary wallet-style limp calf, title and first map browned, a few of the folding maps slightly frayed or creased (Norfolk more so), binding rubbed

Catalogue Note

An uncommon atlas. This example is in soft covers in a bid to capture the lucrative small travelling-atlas market. However "it is clear from the number of surviving copies that sales were modest, and a further edition was not required until the plates came, almost inevitably, into the hands of one of the accumulators of old copper, in this case Carington Bowles" (Hodson).
