Catalogue Note

An uncommon pair of a bird's-eye view/plan and a prospect of Edinburgh, engraved by the Scots mapmaker Andrew Johnston, and first published in 1714. In this state, the pair appeared in editions of the Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne, published by Joseph Smith from 1719 onwards. The plan is a copy of the rare two-sheet plan of Edinburgh drawn by James Gordon in 1647, and published by Johannes Blaeu in 1647, and later re-printed by Fredrick de Wit, hence the title attribution (see lot 18).
