Oblong folio (315 x 380mm.), 66 individual albumen prints (mostly 240 x 290mm.; or the reverse) and 5 folding panoramas formed of 2 or 3 albumen prints joined, all mounted on thick card, recto and verso, many with printed captions pasted on the mount or captioned in ink, contemporary black morocco-backed black lacquered boards, pictorial upper cover in relief with onlays, some creasing to the folding panoramas, scattered spotting and light dust-soiling to mounts, upper joint half torn, covers rubbed, lower cover chipped and scratched; together with a collection of loose photographs of Hong Kong, including a 4-part panorama (creased and torn), and 9 others

Provenance

Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Bt. (1841-1915), Manager of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation; thence by descent to the present owner.

Sir Thomas Jackson was a key figure in the early history of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and was Chief Manager on three occasions between 1876 and 1902, leading it to become the foremost financial institution in Asia. Jackson, who was born in Ireland, joined the Belfast branch of the Bank of Ireland in 1860, he travelled to Hong Kong to join the Agra and Masterbank in 1864 and in 1865 joined the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (later HSBC), a year after the bank was founded. In 1876 Jackson was appointed the chief manager of HSBC, a position he held three times until 1902. In recognition of his services to the bank and Hong Kong, in February 1906 a statue of Jackson was unveiled in Statue Square in front of the Hong Kong premises of HSBC.

Catalogue Note

A fine album of photographs by Afong of Hong Kong, Dutton & Michaels of Canton and others, including possibly Floyd, generally with good dark tones. The images include portraits of Mandarins, Chinese actors, a Chinese fortune teller, views of Canton streets and buildings and a wedding procession, views of Macao, including two of a dragon procession, together with many fine views and panoramas of Hong Kong. The 5 panoramas show: West portion of Hong Kong from Morrison's Hill (2-part); Hong Kong from Head Quarters (2-part); Hong Kong central district and the Kowloon peninsula from Mid-Levels (3-part); Hong Kong, the Peak and Eastern portion of town (2-part); and Canton: Scene at Shameen (2-part).
