Catalogue Note
Robert Gordon and his son James Gordon were the inspiration and editors behind Blaeu's atlas of Scotland, published in 1654, the first printed atlas of Scotland. Among the materials they supplied was a two-sheet plan of Edinburgh (see lot 19), and this sheet with paired panoramas of Edinburgh from the north and south. Inexplicably, neither appeared in the atlas, and only a few examples were printed. Later the plates passed to Frederick de Wit, and were republished with his imprint inserted. Examples without his imprint, as here, are rare, and much sought-after as the most important images available of seventeenth-century Edinburgh.
