Catalogue Note
A fine example of this important French atlas, compiled on France's entry into the war, for use by the French (and American) forces during the Revolutionary War. Designed as parallel for the great British atlases of North America, assembled by Faden and Sayer and Bennett, it brings together French copies of the great British surveys of the region, notably John Mitchell's landmark wall-map of the British Dominions in North America (dated 1777, with the note on German Town inserted), Jefferys' New England, Montresor's New York Province, Scull's Pennsylvania, Fry and Jefferson's Virginia, Mouzon's North and South Carolina, de Brahm's South Carolina and Georgia, and Jefferys' chart of the Gulf Coast, Florida and the Bahamas, and other important maps of Nova Scotia, Delaware Bay and so on.
As such, it is the most important contemporary French cartographic record of the various theatres of fighting in the Revolutionary War.
