Catalogue Note

The first accurate survey of the Intendency of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (the modern provinces of El Beni and Santa Cruz in eastern Bolivia) dedicated by the surveyor, Thaddeus Haënke (1761-1817), to Francisco de Viedman, governor of Cochabamba, under whose jurisdiction the intendancy came.

Haënke was sponsored by the Spanish government to survey Upper Peru (his researches were only published in 1901). Later granted a pension by the viceroy, Haënke settled in Cochabamba in 1796, but continued his ambitious survey of the region, with this detailed manuscript a testament to his skills.
