Catalogue Note

Marquis Tseng (1839-1890) was one of China's earliest diplomats, appointed to London, Paris and St. Petersburg from 1878 to 1885 and who played an important role in the diplomacy that preceded the Sino-French war. The cartes-de-visite depict Marquis Tseng and his wife (both signed), their three sons: King East, King Home and King Pole (d.1887, aged 8), each named in ink, two unidentified girls (their daughters?), and a young Chinese man.
