Catalogue Note
Many of the watercolours were sketched on board HMS Walpole captained by James Sandilands; the ship called at St Anthony, Madras in 1807, Ceylon in September 1807 and Barrackpore in July 1808. In 1808 the artist was on board the HMS Modeste at Patna and Benares and in October 1810 on the HMS Diana which called at Barrackpore and returned home via the Cape of Good Hope in 1812. There is a stylistic similarity between this hand and the work of Edward Hawke Lockyer (1777-1849), Civil Secretary to Admiral Sir Edward Pellew who commanded the East India station from 1804-1809. Locker and the artist of the present sketchbook both drew Government House at Barrackpore in 1808.
The drawings include views of the Isle of St Anthony, sketches of Indiamen at sea, Governor's Garden House, Madras, East views of Ceylon from the sea, The Walpole in a gale, in the Bay of Bengal, Government House at Barrackpore, Camels, Cutwa, Moorshedabad, Raji, Mahal, Patna, Mootee Gurnah or Shower of Pearls on the Ganges, near Mongheer, view from Captain William's Bungalow at Mongheer, Gateway to His Excellency the Vizir of Lucknow's garden House at Doorgah Koond, Benares, a Ghaut at Mizapore, Padshah Mhal on the Jumna, On the Nallah at Barrackpore, A Ton-John and many other sketches of landscapes, figures, ships and trees.
