Catalogue Note

Uncommon carte-à-figures map of the Americas, with borders on three sides, this final state having the lower border removed to make the plate fit standard atlas format. In the early seventeenth century, mapmakers, particularly in Amsterdam, delighted in the pictorial content of their maps, supplementing the information in the body of the map; until the 1660s almost every self-respecting publisher had a set of maps of the continents with panelled borders in stock. However, because of their size, they were only infrequently used in atlas collections, and are generally scarce today.
