Catalogue Note

The Madaba Mosaic map is part of a floor mosaic from a late sixth-century church in Madaba (now lower Jordan), representing the biblical Holy Land and neighbouring regions.

After its discovery in 1884 the map was drawn several times in coloured ink. "Apart from actual documentation, commercial intent also appears to have been involved, the ideal being to sell the drawings to tourists and collectors" Tishby (Holy Land in Maps). This is possibly such an example, as a printed version did not appear until 1906, published by Palmer and Guthe.
