Condition

Overall in very good condition. Please see below the professional condition report prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, New York. This painting is being sold with an elaborately decorated period gilt frame, which is most likely the original frame to the painting. As seen in the catalogue illustration, this frame shows signs of surface wear, small scattered surface losses, surface soiling and discoloration consistent with age. Condition Report prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, December 9, 2011: This picture is painted on panel which is presumably made of wood but possibly an early pressed fiber board. It has been glued down to a slightly larger piece of masonite and so inspection of the reverse of the panel is not possible. This structural work was done most likely to flatten a warp in the original panel. At present, the panels are flat and the paint layer is stable and clean. There is a fine network of cracking throughout, but these are not unstable or disturbing and are not a symptom of any condition issue. There are some small retouches addressing some of the darker cracks in two places only: over the buildings of the right side of the sky and in the upper left corner. However, these are the only retouches and the painting seems to generally be in excellent condition.
