Catalogue Note
A rare set in dust-jackets of Churchill's stupendous narrative of the First World War in Europe. Churchill had been prompted to write the book after having been constantly confronted, after the war, by critics questioning his role in the Gallipoli campaign. Thus he "set to work with astonishing speed and energy on a mammoth history... Dictated to secretaries as he strode up and down the room, it exhibited his passionate interest in war and his romantic conception of the 'true glory' of the troops who perished on the Somme. But he could not write of the bloodbaths on the western front without sombre reflections on the growing destructive power of modern warfare..." (Paul Addison, Oxford DNB).
