Autograph manuscript signed, 2 pages (10 x 7 7/8 in.; 254 x 200 mm), Boston, Massachusetts, 17 November 1881, being the penultimate stanza of  "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" composed by Howe in 1860; printed version of the stanza affixed to the verso of the integral blank. Folding case of silver foil paper with patterned tissue overlay, purple morocco spine lettered gilt.

Catalogue Note

A requested stanza. Howe pens the penultimate stanza of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic beginning: "In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea," for William J. Bok of Brooklyn, New York. On the verso of the integral blank Howe writes: "Thanks for your kind letter. I send  the enclosed with pleasure. J.W. H."
