This is a memorial to George II and a series of congratulatories and expressions of loyalty to George III, compiled at the suggestion of Governor Francis Bernard of Massachusetts, following the fashion for such tributes set by the English universities. The Greek font used (pages 57, 58, 68) was the first used in New England.
The Reverend William McGilchrist (1703-1780) was rector of the Episcopal church in Salem, whose congregation dwindled during the war as the Episcopal clergy was suspected of Toryism.
