Catalogue Note
The glories of Kansas. Custer opens his letter noting he is on duty and currently located at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky. Responding to his correspondent's inquiry he admits up front he can say "nothing which will be satisfactory to you— there is no place or position connected with the government service here which could be made available for you." Custer remarks if he was out West he would be able to accommodate his request. He then recommends his correspondent to locate west of the Missouri River and waxes profound on Kansas: "Kansas offers great inducements to the young man possessing energy and determination. Every one there who is so disposed betters their fortunes. Opportunities for investment in land and cattle are constantly offering themselves." Custer adds he has advised more than a few young to head to Kansas, "all of whom are prospering in this worlds affairs." From the western portion of the state to the Neosho Valley, to the Solomon and Republican valleys and the southwest Custer believes one "can scarcely go amiss."
