Catalogue Note
This rare portrait of Gysis, with determined gaze, prominent cheek bones and aquiline nose, is testament to Thiersch's friendship with the artist. At the age of 27, Thiersch had spent 3 years in Greece with his father, and he later painted frescoes for the Greek church in Vienna. A member of the Academies of Saint Petersburg and Berlin, Thiersch was born and died in Munich, where Gysis was one of the most prominent painters.
