Catalogue Note

The design of ascending columns of palmettes of this Karagashli rug is probably derived from eighteenth-century Caucasian floral carpets, see Şerare Yetkin, Early Caucasian Carpets, Vol. I, London, 1978, cover, pl. 37 and pl. 50. A Karagashli rug of this design was sold Sotheby's New York, 11 December 1991, lot 22. Another comparable rug was formerly in the Bortz Collection and sold Sotheby's London, 29 May 1998, lot 8.
