Description

  • Bacchus et Ariane
  • Huile sur toile, sans cadre

French School around 1640 ; Bacchus and Ariadne ; Oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

To the naked eye: The painting is in not really good condition. It has been a bit strongly relined. It's under a dirty varnish. The skins have, for most of them, lost their glazes during a previous cleaning. There are some air bubbles in the upper left part of the head of Ariane and in the upper left corner due to the relining. Ariane's face is quite retouched; there are some old restorations in the skin and in the background. There is in the lower part, some trace of white painting. There are traces of old vertical lacks, the painting has probably been rolled on the past. Under UV light: The painting is under a green varnish which has been cleaned in the skins. There is an important restoration on Arian's face. Some retouching in the arm and the body of Bacchus and in his drapery, some retouching in the body and the face of the nymph on the right.
