Vinchon obtient le Prix de Rome en 1814 et séjourne à la villa Médicis de 1814 à 1819. Il parfait son éducation artistique en copiant les grands maîtres italiens et l'antique.
Notre tableau reprend un détail de la partie droite de la Bataille de Constantin par Raphael, conservée au Vatican. Vinchon se concentre sur le mouvement, sur les expressions des chevaux et sur l'enchevêtrement des corps.
