This work is in good condition overall. Slight warping on the wood is apparent and there are general indications of wear and handling around the edges, along with associated scuffs. However, is it well-preserved for its age. Under ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

A native of the French Alps region of Savoy, the self-taught painter, Henri Mege not only befriended many Vietnamese artists during his multi-decade stint in Vietnam but also held several exhibitions in the country from the 1940s to 1960s.

Henri Mege, well regarded among the local art community for his unusual painting knife technique, specializes in travel paintings, and was thus compelled to portray his scenes on smaller boards out of necessity. Like a guide book photographer of the past, Mege documented the captivating landscapes encountered on his travels, showing particular fondness for the Annam region of Central Vietnam.

The present Lot is presumably dated around 1954, during the Indochine period and is classic example of the artist inspired admiration for his second home. Journée d'hiver en Haute Region, province de Thanh Hoa, Annam, Indochine is an archetypal display of both Mege's cross-cultural artistic heritage and his groundbreaking introduction of painting knife technique to Vietnam.
