Catalogue Note
The two brothers and icon painters Giovanni Maria and Fabrizio Scupula left the island of Crete to settle in Otranto, Italy in the early 16th century. There they formed a highly individual school of painting which was distinctly Byzantine in character. In the collections of The Hermitage, St Petersburg, is a signed triptych by Ioanes Maria Scupula. Another signed triptych is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The present lot is signed in the same way and in all probability was also part of a triptych.
