Condition

the reins are partially broken and lacking as expected with age. Otherwise in very good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

'Ivan the Terrible on a Horse' is part of a larger composition titled 'Tsar's Hunt or the Hunt of Ivan the Terrible' modelled after the scene described in the Alexei Tolstoy novel, The Silver Prince. A cast of the large composition was sold, Sotheby's London, 1 December 2004, lot 457.  A similar bronze is in the collection of The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg (inv. no. Sk-746), illustrated, Sculpture XVIII- beginning of the XX century, catalogue of the collection of sculptures from The State Russian Museum, Iskusstvo Leningrad, 1988, pp. 56-57.
