Catalogue Note

Sofia was the sister of Repin's first wife, Vera Shevtsova and the wife of his brother, Vasily. She often sat for Repin, who portrayed her in the role of a nun in his 1878 portrait which now hangs in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
