Condition

The painting is slightly brighter than the photgraphy; it is on its original canvas and appears in an overall good condition. A few minor repaints are visible under naked eye and under Uv light in the upper right hand part, in the white area, un the bracelets of the woman's right arm and in the skirt. Several minor repaints are scatteredover the surface in the background

Catalogue Note

Ce peintre américain s'installe à Paris à 19 ans, et entre dans l'atelier de Jean-Léon Gérôme. Un premier voyage en Algérie en 1871 a une influence décisive sur sa carrière. Il éclaircit fortement sa palette et se consacre à la peinture orientaliste. Il explore l'Algérie et en rapporte de nombreux dessins, études et photographies qui l'inspireront sa vie durant. Il se fixe à Paris en 1887, et y expose régulièrement. Il expose également à Londres et aux Etats Unis où ses tableaux, d'une technique parfaite et d'un coloris éclatant, connaissent un grand succès.
