Condition

The work has been carefully presented. The medium, in particular the blue pigment all remain strong and clear. The sheet has surface dirt overall and appears to have been damaged at the sheet edges when removed from previous mounting. These areas of damage have been restored to some extent and are only visible when the work is removed from the current mount. The sheet has not been laid down and is currently hinged to the present mount at two places along the upper sheet edge. Catalogue Note

James Boswell, the flamboyant author of Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785) and biographer of Dr. Samuel Johnson (1791), is portrayed by an artist copying Sir Thomas Lawrence's drawing James Boswell Esq. from Memory (Tate Gallery, London). Rapidly executed on Athenaeum Club paper the work must date from after 1824 as the club was not founded until that year. The drawing indicates Boswell's continued popularity even 30 years after his death.
