  • inscribed in pencil Sorrento/ Augt 20 1838 lower right and further inscribed with color notes lower right
  • pencil on green wove paper.  Together with Edward Lear, Study of a Tree at Pelago, pen and brown ink heightened with white on buff-colored wove paper, inscribed and dated: Pelajo [sic]. Aug 17 1838 lower right and Edward Lear, Vole, pen and brown ink and pencil on wove paper, signed E.L centre left and later inscribed Landseer/ Edward Lear on the reverse. 3 works.

Condition

The first: Study of Trees near Sorrento: This work has been carefully presented and preserved. The sheet has not been laid down but is attached to the current mount on the reverse in six places. There is minor surface dirt to the sheet and one or two small foxmarks, these defects can only be seen on close inspection. The pencil has remained strong and clear. The second: Study of a Tree: This work has been carefully presented. The sheet has been laid down. The sheet has suffered from staining. Throughout the work there are scattered discolourations which can be seen in the illustration. The medium has remained strong. The third: Vole: This work has been carefully presented. The sheet has not been laid down but is attached to the mount on the reverse along the sheet edges. There is a repaired tear, measuring 3.2 cm., which runs vertically through the upper centre of the sheet. There is a second repaired tear, measuring 1.1 cm., at the right hand edge of the sheet. There is very minor surface dirt. The medium has remained strong.
