Condition

The sheet has been carefully presented. The strength of the (graphite) pencil remains strong and clear. The sheet has suffered from light staining and minor foxing overall. There are minor tears to the sheet edges which have been carefully repaired. They appear to be the result from this work being laid down at the edges in the past and subsequently removed without due care and attention. The work has now been carefully restored and delicately laid down at the edges. The chalk is much stronger than the illustration in the catalogue and the paper less pink. Catalogue Note

This plein-air drawing was taken at Llyn Gwynant and shows the Gwynant Valley in North Wales, looking towards the Snowdon mountain range. Palmer visited Wales in 1835 and again in 1836 and this sheet dates from one of these tours. Despite the drawing's small scale, Palmer has successfully captured the grandeur of the mountainous landscape. It relates to a watercolor of a similar view in the Yale Center of British Art, New Haven (Raymond Lister, Catalogue Raisonne of the Works of Samuel Palmer, 1988, p. 112, no. 252).
