Catalogue Note
Wilhelm I and Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach were married in the chapel of Charlottenburg Palace on June 11, 1829. Their only son, Frederick III, the future German Emperor, married Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, on January 25, 1858. The present charger therefore appears to have been commissioned by Queen Victoria to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of her daughter's parents-in-law.
