Catalogue Note

A nearly identical tea caddy is illustrated in John Loring's Magnificent Tiffany Silver, 2001, p. 35.  Loring notes that the ball handle was inspired by the work of Christopher Dresser, and that the bone plaque was likely part of a large purchase of Japanese arts and crafts purchased by Dresser and authorized by Edward C. Moore on behalf of Tiffany & Co. in 1867-77.  A caddy with the same feet and finial was exhibited at the 1878 Paris exhibition.  Another example decorated with sparrows was sold in these room on 22 January 2010, lot 395.
