Description

  • various materials: ribbon, woven textile strips, water coloured paper, lace, metal-braid and silver foil
  • Framed: 54.5cm. high, 73cm. wide, 1ft. 9in. 2ft. 4in.; Collage visible: 47.3cm. high, 65.7cm. wide, 1ft. 6in., 2ft. 1in.
applied with various materials including ribbon, woven textiles, silver foil, water coloured paper with `grotesque' strips and landscape vignettes, lace and metal braid, the male figure with silk clothing and painted paper hand and face, and holding a paper document signed Memor. del Duc Fici, and in addition signed Mario Fici di Palermo within the clock face within the central real mirror plate, mounted in a marquetry wooden, glazed frame

Condition

Some minor losses in area, especially of the metal areas, and peeling up of edges. Some staining and discolouration. Duca Fici's face is in very good condition. His costume is lacking a medallion and there is some staining. Overall in good condition.

Catalogue Note

For a comparable portrait panel, of vertical format with a lady in court dress within a windowed interior, dated 1791 and with an applied corner cartouche signed Lat.Tantius Sergardi Fecit 1791, see Sotheby's, London, 25th May 1990, lot 142.  It depicts the same distinctive attention to detail in the contents of each item within the interior, and is a collage comprised of various materials.
