Condition
Original canvas. There is scattered craquelure, notably in the white of his dress. There is little sign of retouching under ultraviolet light, with the exception of a small speck in the sitter's right eye. There is some fluorescence to the reds surrounding the face, although these pigments do appear to be contemporaneous with the painting. Held in a decorative gilt cassetta frame.

Catalogue Note
Painted circa 1870/71.
Prince Gottfried zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1867-1932) was an Austro-Hungarian army officer and diplomat during World War I. He was invested as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1917. In 1908 he married Archduchess Maria Henriette of Austria-Teschen (1883–1956). Lot 63 bears his inventory label and lot 151 was a gift to his future sister in law Princess Maria Anna of Bourbon Parma.
