Condition

The canvas has been re-lined. There are strokes of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably spots in her face and along her hairline and above her right eye, and some fine craquelure, notably in the upper third and lower-right, also with some associated retouching. Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

Maria Luísa of Spain (1745-1792) was daughter of Charles III of Spain and Anna Amalia of Saxony, and consort of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II. Her costume is typical of the late 1780s.
