Tirage à la gomme bichromatée d'époque sur papier canson jaunâtre très fin. Signé et daté C. Puyo 02 à l'encre en bas à gauche. Monté sur carton original. Sous passe-partout.

Condition

In good general condition. There is some very light superficial rubbing mainly in the centre toward the bottom left area, visible in raking light only. With some light foxing mainly in the upper portion of the print and some very light discoloration in the lower right portion. With a tiny spot of glue (?) in the upper left and right corners visible in raking light only; with a very light fold of approx. 4 cm in the lower left corner in the print and in the card. The upper corners of the card are torn probably by removing the card from an earlier mount.

Catalogue Note

Officier dans l'armée française, le commandant Puyo est devenu, avec Robert Demachy, une figure majeure du pictorialisme français. Ensemble, ils ont été parmi les fondateurs du Photo Club de Paris en 1894 et les organisateurs de son premier salon. A l'étranger, il s'est fait remarquer par l'inclusion en 1906 de quelques-unes de ses images dans Camera Work d'Alfred Stieglitz. Technicien adroit, il a perfectionné les procédés à la gomme bichromatée ainsi que le report à l'huile et a écrit de nombreux articles sur le sujet.
De son œuvre photographique émane un penchant pour les belles femmes; elles apparaissent dans des formes diverses: études de personnages, nus, portraits de modèles professionnels ou demi-mondaines élégantes.
