Description

  • Edward Weston
  • 'CYPRESS AND STONE CROP'
  • gelatin silver
mounted, initialed and dated in pencil on the mount, signed, titled, and dated in pencil on the reverse, 1930, probably printed in the 1940s (Conger 624)

Provenance

Acquired from G. Ray Hawkins, Los Angeles, 1984

Condition

In addition to the print of this image in the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Conger locates prints in the following institutional collections: Huntington Library, San Marino; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Special Collections, University of California, Santa Cruz, this last a Project Print. This luminous print, on paper with a surface sheen and mounted to thin buff-colored board, is in generally excellent condition. The mount edges are somewhat darkened, and there appears to have been previous exposure to moisture along the lower edge. There is light graphite offsetting on the mount from the mat. The mount is hinged on the reverse with cloth tape to a modern mat. On the reverse of the mount, along the upper edge, there is a loss of the top paper ply from previously affixed hinges. There are also scattered, light rust-colored fingerprints on the reverse.
