Description

  • Robert Rauschenberg
  • STUDIES FOR CHINESE SUMMERHALL
  • chromogenic prints
(Tampa: University of South Florida Graphicstudio, 1983, a total edition of 35), a suite 18 oversized and 10 smaller chromogenic prints, each signed and editioned 'Printers Proof' in ink and with the Graphicstudio blindstamp in the margin, 1983 (28)

Condition

In collaboration with Graphicstudio at the University of South Florida, Rauschenberg issued two editions of photographs from his 1982 trip to China. Each set was printed in an edition of 30, plus printer's or artist's proofs. The smaller set, measuring 15 1/4 by 15 1/4 inches, contains 10 prints, and the larger set, measuring 26 by 26 inches, contains 18 prints. These chromogenic prints are in generally excellent condition. The colors remain generally saturated, with only minor occasional. The margins are lightly yellowed. Due to the size of the larger prints, there is some very minor rippling at the edges.

Catalogue Note

In 1982, Robert Rauschenberg traveled to China to work with local Chinese artists.  The time he spent immersed in Chinese culture and exposed to non-Western artistic traditions resulted in a prolific number of photographs.  In hundreds of images, Rauschenberg explored the intersection of tradition, religion, and the everyday life.  These photographs inspired the creation of Chinese Summerhall, a 100-foot-long collaged photograph produced in coordination with University of South Florida's Graphicstudio upon his return to America.  Rauschenberg selected the suite of images offered here as representative of the Summerhall mural project and issued them in a limited edition of 30 chromogenic prints.
