Description

  • Herbert List
  • 'BRILLEN AM VIERWALDSTÄTTERSEE' (SUNGLASSES, LAKE LUCERNE)
  • Gelatin silver print
signed and titled in ink and with number '5' in pencil and the photographer's credit/copyright stamp on the reverse, framed, 1936, possibly printed in the late 1940s (Herbert List: The Monograph, pp. 4-5; Metken, pl. 17)

Provenance

Christie's New York, 23 April 1990, Lot 44

Condition

Please note that this print was photographed, matted, in its frame. The cropping, therefore, is tighter in the catalogue illustration. This early print, on single-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. The edges are lightly rubbed, and the lower right corner is creased. This crease does not appear to break the emulsion and has been repaired on the reverse. When examined in raking light, soft handling creases--both linear (2- and 3 1/4-inch) and small crescent-shaped--are visible on the surface. These are visible only under close examination and not at a normal viewing distance. When examined with ultra-violet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
